What Causes Stabbing Pain On Left Side Of Abdomen?

I woke up this morning with a stab feeling pain on my left side is stomach near my hip bone. I had a bowel movement and shortly after it eased up a bit. All day when I press on that spot it really still hurts and after sitting for a longer time and then getting up it seems to hurt a little bit more. Can you help?
