What Causes Stabbing Pain On Top Of Upper Left Leg?

I am having a stabbing pain on the top of my upper left leg, on the front, I injured my knee a year and a half ago. Is this nerve damage? My leg will go numb after I am on it for about 15 min. When the Dr assessed my knee a year and a half ago he said it would take a long time to heal.
