What Causes Stiffness And Tenderness Behind The Adam's Apple?

The front of my neck under my chin, especially on the left side is tender to the touch. Internally, it is painful to swallow (not food but rather just saliva). The pain is different than a traditional sore throat with a cold for example. It is almost as if the entire area behind my Adams apple is stiff and tender.
