What Causes Stiffness Below Knees After An Injury?

I just fell on some ice while walking outside... hit my face and knee with a bruise below the knee. I can walk on it, but it feels stiff going down stairs....I fly tomorrow to Hawaii from Colorado which is an 8 or 9 hour flight. Is there any chance of blood clotting? Should I go have an xray?
