What Causes Stinging Pain During Defecation?

Hello I m pretty emberrassed about this, when I take a poop, it feels like a needle is poking me in the side of my anus. It s tender for while afterwards but seems to settle down, until I have to go again. Any ideas or suggestions why, and what I can do to relieve this?
