What Causes Stomach Cramps During Periods?

hi, I am 18 and over the past 5 months i have been having stomach cramps during my periods and then they last about 7 days. i get them every 5 weeks and they are very heavy for the first 3 days. i dont really know what to do and if i should go and see my doctor. or if it is nothing to worry about.
