What Causes Stomach Upset That Reduces With Pepto-Bismol?

I woke up this am with an upset stomach. When I consume any food it will react with being more upset. I took some Pepto Bismal and it seemed to settle it. Could this be a stomach virus or the onset of the flu?
Is there anything else I should be taking to calm it?
