What Causes Strange Smells In A Kidney Cancer Patient?

My friend had kidney cancer a few years ago, lately she has been getting strange smells, like she can smell smoke or burning that no one else can smell. Often she wakes up because the smell I strong. She doesn't think she needs to see doctor but I think she does.
