What Causes Sudden Allergic Coughing And Wheezing?

I have brother and sisters and my son who have had asthma and allergies, I never had promblems with this or allergies. Now that I am 56 years of age in Feb. I startded having problems with breathing. Coughing, weezing, couldn t get air in and hard to get air out. In April I was diagnosed with asthma. How can that be? When I never Had a hint of it befor. I lived in El Paso Texas and now I moved to California.
