What Causes Sudden Gasping For Breath While Sleeping?

Just right as im about to fall asleep i jolt up feeling like i stopped breathing, and im all out of breathe...so then i try to fall asleep again, and it keeps happening. Only happen ones before like 7 months ago, however last night was very strong, my heart is going crazy today and still feels heavy and odd like I m going to have a panic atac. Wonder what this is I should I go and check with my GP? Thank you
