What Causes Sudden Increase In Eye Floaters In Left Eye?

Thank you. I have a seemingly sudden increase in eye floaters in my left eye. Also, when I look abruptly to my right, there appears to be a bright flash in my lower left field of vision. I noticed the floaters 3 days ago. I am very nearsighted, usually wearing contacts. I called my ophthalmologist s office; they will see me Tuesday morning. Should I be alarmed & go to the emergency room or urgent care facility to check for retinal detachment or patiently wait for my appointment? Many thanks!
