What Causes Swelling And Hardness In Knees?

My knee is slightly swollen and it feels like there maybe be something inside it because it is hard to bend completely. When I walk up the stairs I hear a cracking noise. It s not completely painful, just uncomfortable. What do you think it may be? I am worried I am developing water in the knee.
