What Causes Swelling And Pain In Ankle Despite Taking Ibuprofen?

Myleft ankle has been swollen and painful where it joins the foot for about one week. There has been no known injury. It feels better with ibuprofen, but the pain intensifies when the medication wears off. The more I walk on it the better it feels. The swelling goes down some overnight, but returns as I sit during the day at work.
