What Causes Swelling And Tenderness In The Area Of Injection?

I recetly had a drip fitted a glucose drip, i was in a Bolivian Hospital, I took the drip out myself for the nurse took forever to come, to which they did not mind, howevere since then the area where the drip was inserted has swolen up and feels very tender, I was just wondering whether that was a normal occurance? thank you
