What Causes Swelling In Knee Along With Bruising On Calf?

Fell and landed on a rock just below my knee cap 10 days ago. within a day there was swelling at the point of contact, but following the swelling there was significant bruising on my calf which is still there. There is minimal pain aside from direct contact with the original area of the injury. Why would the bruising occur in the calf?
