What Causes Swelling In The Hands And Wrists After Bursa Sac Removal?

I had my bursa sac removed 5 days ago. Was very large. Incision was 9 inches. After bracing was removed, keeping my arm straight, my hand and wrist have swollen quite large. Doctor has set up physical therapy, starting in a few days, but mean time what could I do to help the swelling go down. Heat, cold, etc. Thank you.
