What Causes Swelling In The Throat?

tThe doctor just tried putting a scope down my sons throat to see why trouble swallowing. His throat was so enlarged he couldn t get the scope down thru the throat. He said he thinks he might have cancer. Does the necessarly mean cancer or could it be something else.
