What Causes Swelling In Throat?

My husband has a sudden acute swelling of a part of his throat. It appeared overnight. It protrudes in down his tongue from the back of his throat. It looks like a second miniature tongue. He sent me a photo which I could send you. I want to know what it could be. He is out of town. I told him to go to the emergency room.
