What Causes Swelling Of Big Toe With Slight Discharge?

Have a swelling on big toe just below the cuticle. No injury, no indication where it came from - about a month ago. It is red but doesn t really hurt or itch. And there is a little bit of discharge from the cuticle. The toe next to the big toe does press in against it - you can even see a bit of an indentation at times. And when I tape the second toe to the third toe (buddy taping) to keep the second toe away from the big toe, the big toe is less red.
