What Causes Swelling Of Lymph Node In Groin With Sever UTI?

about 10 days ago my partner and I had sex. The next day I had the beginning of what turned to be a severe UTI (no hx of these before) and he became ill, a lymph on his groin swelled and he got a rash on his penis. His doc is testing for herpes...but...I'm negative...or was until this incident....could it be a shared bacterial infection and not herpes since we both got sick in the same time frame?
