What Causes Swollen White Papillae On Tongue?

Hi Doc. I have 2 pappilae on the tip of my tongue that is swollen white and painfull. I had this before a little deeper on my tongue and I eventually clipped it of with a nailclipper (sterilised of course) because I couldn't take it anymore. I recently quit smoking and I am not sure if smoking could be the cause. Please advise on prevention, treatment and what the heck it is
