What Causes Tenderness In Left Throat Gland?

my left throat gland has been tender for a week. slight cold but no sore throat. thought i had pulled a shoulder muscle in the gym but it has persisted for too long. why one painful gland and not the other? no tooth issues or other visible infections on the let side of my face. thanks.
