What Causes The Missing Of Mirena Coil In The Vagina?

I went to have a mirena coil removed today but it couldn't be found. I have been advised that I will be referred to the hospital in order for it to be removed surgically. I am totally against this as I have never been in hospital or had a day off work (I am 44 yrs old & take pride in the fact I'm fit & healthy). Why can't I just leave it there & ignore it? It took a huge amount of courage just to go and have it removed & found the whole experience uncomfortable and distressing.
