What Causes The Skin To Become Darker?

Hello I am a native Kenyan with light african tone. Since 2008 I have noticed my skin tone becoming darker over time. I am not sure why. I lived in Kenya until age 27 and currently live in Seattle for the past 5 years. I am concerned if it will continue to become darker.
