What Causes The White Coating On The Tongue?

I have a white coating on my tongue and was curious what is causing this? I have had it for a few years. I possibly also have symptoms of thrush...I took a prescribe tablet but it has not cleared the infection. Could i possibly have a hormonal imbalance?
