What Causes Thick Brown Vaginal Discharge Before Menstruation?

Me and my husband are trying to conceive. Right before my period I had a thick brown discharge.. A day later thought I was starting my period. It seemed shorter than normal and on the last day I took my tampon out and it had that brown discharge on it with no blood... Wasn t sure what that meant.
