What Causes Toenails To Blacken?

My husband has type 2 diabetice and is controled with tablets and injection. Over the last few months he has notices that two of his toe nails have turned black, his dr has refered him to an emergency appointment with a skin consultant and mentioned skin cancer?? Could it be just his condition?
