What Causes Tonsils Area Pus, Throat Redness And Neck Gland Swelling?

I have had my tonsils oit for about two years-a few days ago I noticed puss on the right side where my tonsil ws and my throat is red and my right side of my neck hurst and gland swollen. I smoke for three months, stopped about a week ago. Neg strep.
