What Causes Vaginal Bleeding Before Periods Are Due?

I am 24 years old. I am on on birth control and I haven't missed any pills this month. I still have 9 pills left in the package and I am not supposed to get my period for about 2 more weeks. However, for the past 2 mornings I have woke up with pretty heavy vaginal bleeding that disappears after a little while. Is this serious?
