What Causes Vaginal Bleeding During Pregnancy?

Hi...I am 5 weeks along... have been have mild bleeding and my hcg numbers are not doubling. This is my first pregnancy and I am worried that I might lose it. I have gone to the er and they say it looks good but if my bleeding increases to come back. What causes bleeding during pregnancy and why isn t my numbers doubling as they should be?
