What Causes Vaginal Bleeding In Between My Periods?

I have been experiencing some bleeding from my vaginal between my periods. The bleeding is very light but im beginning to worry b/c it has been happening on and off for about almost a year now... and im not sexually active in ANYWAY. Could you explain to me what may be the cause of this?
