What Causes Vaginal Spotting After Taking Iron Supplements?

I dont usually take iron suppliments, but when I try to give blood they sometimes tell me my iron is a little to low, so today I took an iron suppliment because I had intentions to give blood and now I have some vaginal bleeding and spotting. I'm not supposted to get my period until next week tuesday. Is my spottong caused by me taking that iron suppliment?
