What Causes Warts On The Palms?

I have what I thought to be the beginnings of a wart on my hand, but now I'm not so sure. Its located on the palm of my hand at the base of my index finger. It protrudes out and if it is knocked on things the wrong way will bleed quite a bit until I've put pressure on it for what seems like a few minutes. It looks a little swollen and like it may be infected. I've been keeping it as clean as possible and putting antibacteria gel on it and covering it with a bandaid. Sometimes I try to let it have air, but that's usually when it gets bumped on something and bleeds. I am planning to make an appointment with my mom's dermotologist, but haven't been able to get in yet. Should I be concerned, and should I just go to a general doctor? What might it be?
