What Causes Welts On Arms, Back And Legs?

My 12 yr. old son woke up this morning with welts on his upper arms and shoulders. He seemed to have a bug bite on his right shoulder in the back. He had a long line connecting the welts. I gave him benadryl and it seemed to go away. Now he has the welts on his arms and his back and his legs.
