What Causes White Spots On The Skin?

about two years ago this white spots started showing up on my fiancee, he was roofing at the time so we figured it was from insulation or the sun.then about a year after he developed it i started to get them. it started out one or two on my arm and chest, then it escalated and now it is starting to take over.we have no idea what it could be. the research i hav done has mentioned something aboout versicolor.the spots dont itch. they are white and seem to develop around a hair folicle.and inside it is like dry skin. and when they start to develop it starts out pink and a tad bit raised off the skin.please help!!!
