What Could Dark Spots On Ribcage Be?

I'm a 27 year old female. Just recently noticed a dark spot on my ribcage which looks like a birthmark but has never been there before. The spot is darker in color than my skin tone and is about 3 inches in diameter. The spot is smooth, again, like a birthmark. Please give any advise or explanation possible. Thank you.
