What Could Painful Bruise On Chest Post A Fall Suggest?

Asking for my significant other - she took a fall about two weeks ago, but the fall was broken by a few moveable/soft objects...except a kitchen chair which she feel hard against, in the sternum area of her chest. She had an oblong, vertical bruise about 4-5 that has since go away. She s still having pain in the area and it s somewhat uncomfortable to breath, both in and out. Time for an X-ray? Is there anything you can do for a severe contusion or even a break in the sternum or a rib?
