What Could Passing Occasional Blood Clots Suggest?

Hi, I'm a seventeen year-old girl and i'm wondering if I should be worried about large clots. On one occasion when I was fifteen I passed a clot about the size of a tennis ball, this scared me a lot. Is there any way to prevent clotting in the futre?
