What Could Sudden Severe Itching In Legs Indicate?

My mom, who is 78 years old, suddenly had severe itching other legs tonite, especially if she touched them. It seemed to be extremely uncomfortable. I did apply calamine lotion and it seemed to help a little. What could have caused this. She says it has never happened before but she also has alzheimer s and may not remember.
