What Could Thumping Ear Sensation Suggest?

Whenever I drink, I get a sensation in my left ear of a "thumping" noise as though my ear drum is being irritated or bumped repeatedly. It is not connected to my heartbeat or any other bodily function. Nor does it seem to happen outside the presence of alcohol.
