What Do Recurring Flashes Of Light In The Peripheral Vision Of Left Eye Suggest?

I'm a male, age 66. I recently had my eyes examined and got a clean bill of health.
About an hour ago I started noticing a flash of light in the peripheral vision of my left eye.
It comes and goes and is more noticeable outside in the dark. It occuts 2-3 times then quits. The 10-15 minutes later does it again. What I see out of the corner of my eye can best be described as as very thin shaft of light. When it first occured I thought someone was shooting a lazer light near me, as he color was red. The light now seem more white.
