What Does A Hard Lump Along With Swelling On Knee Indicate?

I fell on concrete really hard on my left knee, my knee got really swollen immediately i had x rays done nithimg broke the same day of my fall. Yesterday i went to see my primary doctor and he told me that i have to wait 10 more days until the swallong goes down to get an mri done. Is that true?
