What Does A Lump On Foot Indicate?

I m a 43 year old male. I started with a hard lump about an inch long on my foot. It is now at least 2 inches and L shaped. It starts at my foot and goes up the front of my ankle. I had an mri when it first started, however, the dr. didn t know what it was. The doctor didn t want to operate because of the nerves in the foot. Could it be cancer?
