What Does A Small Round Bruise Near Armpit Indicate?

My husband has had a small round bruise on his upper arm near his armpit for a few week and now the bruise has gotten larger and turned redish. He says it is not painful. What could this be? He doesn't want to go to the doctor for a bruise but I am concerned that it is something else because he doesn't know how he even got it.
