What Does Black Spot On Toe Nail Suggest?

Hi, I removed my nail polish off my toes as I noticed a black spot appearing on the right side of my big toe nail. It begins just above the nail bed and all the way up. It doesn't hurt to the touch but I have been to places where people have stepped on my feet with high heels on. Not sure if this is a bruise or fungus
