What Does Blood Discharge From Ears Without Pain Indicate?

I am a 42 yr old male with no health problems. I had blood work done 3 months ago with no abnormalities shown at that time. I woke up this morning with blood draining from my right ear, with no pain. However, the headache I ve had everyday for several months was suddenly gone. It wasn t much blood, maybe 10 ml total. Enough to soak 5 or 6 Q-tips. There was a bit of residual blood throughout the morning but trickled to nothing. There is still no pain. I am a bit worried because my wife is a nurse and has no idea what the cause of this may be.
