What Does Brown Color Toenail Indicate?

I was walking barefoot and caught my middle toe on an uneven surface that my toenail broke and i eventually had to pull it off. Well it has since grown back but it had grown back brown in color and looks disfigured. Why did this happen and how can I have it grown back and look normal.
