What Does Brown Vaginal Discharge Indicate?

I am a female, 20 years old, I started my period yesterday which was 2 days late one day of brownish reddish discharge, followed by cramps but not like other cramps I have had before, the middle of my stomach hurts, I cant eat or drink with out my stomach hurting (burning, tight feeling). I wonder if its just cramps or something else. I had a splenectomy about a little over a year ago, ( I had an infected cyst in my spleen).
