What Does Firmness In The Prostate Indicate?

My husband will be 81 on Sunday. He went to a gastroenterologist in preparation for a colonoscopy and was told he had a firm prostate and to see a urologist. The urologist said he wants to take a biopsy. Is this the normal next step? Thank you YYYY@YYYY
