What Does Perimenopause Mean?

I am 44yrs of age and my periods have changed dramatically over the last 6mths. The doctor suggested I have a blood test to see if I am perimenopausal. I found out today from the receptionist that 2 tests came back showing normal and negative. What that means i am unsure and today they are retesting blood count as it was borderline. What does all this mean?
